Prayer Chaplain Training

You are invited to participate in Chaplain Training for your Center, along with Rev. Jane Hiatt and me, should you be interested.

Unity Spiritual Center Spokane and Unity Spiritual Community of Central Oregon will be offering three months of chaplain training on Zoom Tuesday evenings beginning March 12. Along with the Zoom sessions will be once a month, local intensives at our respective Centers. 

We will charge $50 a month for existing chaplains and $75 for newly trained chaplains with the proviso they sign a commitment document to serve for a year once the training is complete. Each center will collect and keep their own money.

Upon completion of the training, it is our intention that the learner is able to:

  1. Speak to “What Unity is.” This includes knowing and living into the Five Principles and 12 Powers.
  2. Understand the value of a daily spiritual practice that includes meditation and prayer.
  3. Facilitate meditation with integrated silence. 
  4. Articulate what Affirmative Prayer is and is able to pray for themselves. 
  5. Confidently pray with others on Sundays and for others on the prayer list. 
  6. Conduct a hospital visit. 
  7. Stand on platform Sunday mornings and deliver a prayer with confidence, knowing how to use a microphone and hold space. 
  8. Lead a prayer circle with volunteers before service.
  9. Refer individuals to resources within the community.

The learner will be asked to keep a prayer journal and notes on reading and pray regularly with a prayer partner beginning week four. 

As of right now the required books we have selected, yet aren't wed to, include:

  • Healing Letters, Myrtle Fillmore
  • Discover Your Divinity, Linda Martella-Whitsett and DeeAnn Weir Morency
  • This Thing Called You, Dr. Ernest Holmes
  • How I Use Truth, H. Emilie Cady 

Reverend Bonnie will teach the first three classes in March, afterwhich Al Koensfeld (Spokane's Lead Chaplain), Rev. Jane Hiatt, Donna McLure (hospital chaplain) will teach some of the units. And, if your Center participates, the Spiritual Leader/Sr Minister of the Center may also facilitate some Zoom sessions, if desired.

Northwest Unity Centers are invited to participate in this training. The leaders of the Center will have/create their own selection process for those who participate. For example, in Spokane, we require that a chaplain be a member, demonstrate some spiritual maturity, meet with Al and Rev. Bonnie to determine interest and commitment level. 

Each Center will market/collect/keep their own fees. Each Center will facilitate their own in-person intensives with whatever content fits for your Center. This is where Spokane will practice stage presence, praying in person, local resource training, etc. Your Center will decide what works best for you.
